Why a microwave needs its own circuit
A microwave is one of the most electrically demanding small appliances in any kitchen. A typical over-the-range (OTR) unit pulls 1,200 to 1,700 watts while cooking, and the magnetron — the component that actually generates the microwaves — draws that power in fast, repeated surges rather than a smooth, steady load. On a 120-volt circuit, 1,500 watts works out to roughly 12.5 amps of continuous draw, and the inrush at startup is higher still. That is most of the capacity of a 15-amp circuit before you have plugged in anything else.
Older kitchens were often wired so the microwave shared a circuit with the small-appliance countertop outlets. The 2026 reality is that the same circuit may also be feeding a coffee maker, a toaster, an air fryer, or a stand mixer. When the microwave's magnetron kicks on at the same moment another high-draw appliance is running, the combined load briefly exceeds the breaker's rating and the breaker trips. That is not a defective breaker — it is the breaker doing exactly its job. The receptacle for an OTR microwave is required to be inside that upper cabinet — the cord routes up through a hole in the cabinet floor and plugs into an outlet hidden above. Countertop microwaves are more flexible. Can I tap into an existing countertop circuit?
