Our Story
A family business built on the trade.
The work runs in the family. Tom Long, John's father, spent his entire career as a longtime IBEW Local 26 electrician and rose to a leadership role on the job site. He showed his son what good electrical work looked like, and what it meant to take pride in the trade.
John Long grew up watching that, and followed him in. He became a Master Electrician licensed in Virginia, Maryland, and DC, and in 1996 he opened AJ Long Electric. The mission from day one was simple, and it has not changed: high-quality work, honest pricing, and customer service worth talking about. That standard is what carried the company for thirty years.

In 2019, John's son Matt joined the family business. He spent his first months on the trucks alongside his dad, then stepped into the office, took over the phones, brought the company onto modern scheduling software, and built its first website. Matt came back for one reason: to make sure the reputation his father spent three decades building lives on, and that the standard Tom showed John, and John showed him, gets carried into the next generation of customers.

Looking back on his career, John realized it was around his fifteenth year in the trade that he stopped running into things he'd never seen — the first time he felt completely comfortable, knew everything that needed to be known, and could handle any situation a home could throw at him. Residential work is like that: there are no blueprints, and no guarantee the last person in those walls was a licensed electrician. You don't know what you haven't seen, and you only realize it once you're twenty or thirty years in. That's why we strive for electricians with over 25 years of experience, and why newer electricians run only the work they've mastered, learning under our veterans.
