Our Story
A family business built on the trade.
Tom Long spent his career with IBEW Local 26, working his way from apprentice to positions of greater responsibility. He later helped his son John enter the union, where John spent 15 years building his own experience in the trade.
John wanted more control over the balance between earning a living and being there for his family. In 1996, he committed to his first Yellow Pages ad at the end of the final day before the cutoff. His attention had been on making the business work for his family; its name was still undecided. The family name supplied the answer, marking the start of the business known today as AJ Long Electric.

John later passed the trade to his own son, Matt, beginning with patient practice around age 13. Respect for the home, attention to detail, and honest advice were part of every lesson. College and a career in California brought experience in operations and business development; family brought Matt home. Today, father and son combine that experience with John's electrical expertise. New tools and a stronger online presence help people find the reputation John spent decades earning.

Looking back on his career, John realized it was around his fifteenth year in the trade that he stopped running into things he'd never seen — the first time he felt completely comfortable, knew everything that needed to be known, and could handle any situation a home could throw at him. Residential work is like that: there are no blueprints, and no guarantee the last person in those walls was a licensed electrician. You don't know what you haven't seen, and you only realize it once you're twenty or thirty years in. That's why we strive for electricians with over 25 years of experience, and why newer electricians run only the work they've mastered, learning under our veterans.

John founded AJ Long Electric in 1996 with one standard: high-quality work, honest pricing, and customer service worth talking about. A Master Electrician licensed in Virginia, Maryland, and DC, he learned the trade from his own father, a longtime IBEW Local 26 electrician, and has spent thirty years carrying it forward.

Matt learned the trade alongside John from around age 13. After college and a career in operations and business development in California, he returned to be closer to family. He now leads the team with John's expertise and support.
