Meet the AJ Long Electric Team
AJ Long Electric is a family business in the most literal sense — founded by Master Electrician John Long in 1996 and joined by his son Matt in 2018. Three generations of electricians in the family, three decades of work across Northern Virginia, DC, and Maryland, and one standard on every job: high-quality work, honest pricing, and customer service worth talking about.

John Long
Founder & Master Electrician
John founded AJ Long Electric in 1996 from a deeply personal need — providing the kind of stable, dependable income a family relies on, at a time when his daughter required specialized medical care. Three decades later, that founding principle still drives every decision the company makes: treat every customer like family, deliver honest quality work at fair prices, and build something lasting.
John's expertise spans the full range of residential and commercial electrical work — service entrance upgrades, panel replacements, generator installations, EV charger installs, and the kind of complex diagnostic troubleshooting that comes from decades in the field. He holds a Virginia Class A contractor license (#2701 048844A) and is licensed in Maryland and DC.
What started as a one-man operation has grown into one of Northern Virginia's most-reviewed electrical contractors — 1,400+ five-star reviews across four verified Google Business Profiles in Fairfax, Bowie, Burke, and Annandale. The growth has never changed the standard of work or the values that started the company.
I started this business to take care of my family. That same commitment — to be there when it matters and deliver work you can count on — is what we bring to every customer.

Matt Long
Operations & Business Manager
Matt grew up watching his father build AJ Long Electric. He spent his early career outside the trades — picking up a background in business operations and technology — and rejoined the family business in 2019 to help carry it into its next chapter.
His role spans the operational side of the business: scheduling and dispatch, customer relationships, technology and software integration (including the Housecall Pro platform that runs scheduling and lead capture), and the SEO + content work that puts the company in front of homeowners searching for an honest electrician. The technical electrical work stays with John and the master-electrician team; Matt's job is making sure the rest of the business runs cleanly so the technicians can focus on craft.
The transition from one-man operation to a multi-location business with four verified Google Business Profiles (Fairfax HQ, Bowie, Burke, Annandale) has happened largely in the years since Matt joined. The values are unchanged — what's changed is the scale of customers the company can reach.
I came back because what my father built matters. It's not just a business — it's a promise to our community that they'll always get honest service from people who genuinely care.
Three decades of master craftsmanship, plus the operational rigor to match
The father-son combination is unusual in residential electrical contracting in Northern Virginia, and it's the company's defining advantage. John's 30 years of master electrician work — the depth of judgment you only get from doing thousands of panel upgrades, troubleshooting calls, and code-compliance inspections — is what you actually buy when you hire AJ Long. Matt's job is to make sure the rest of the operation (scheduling, permitting coordination with Fairfax County and the surrounding jurisdictions, follow-through, written quotes, written warranties) doesn't get in the way of that.
Practically, this shows up in a few specific ways:
- Honest quotes, in writing, before the work starts. Every job is quoted in writing with no mid-job change orders. The number we give you is the number you pay.
- 5-year warranty on installation labor. Manufacturer warranties pass through; our 5-year labor warranty backs every install.
- All permits pulled under our master license. You never deal with permit paperwork. Fairfax County DPWES, Arlington, Alexandria, Loudoun, Prince William, Bowie/Maryland — we handle the filing and meet the inspector.
- Same-day response for emergencies. 24/7 emergency line at (703) 997-0026. For non-emergency work, scheduled appointments with a specific time so you don't wait around all day.
Our four verified Google Business Profiles aggregate over 1,400 five-star reviews — see customer reviews for the full set.
