AI, Explained
What is an AI agent?
You've heard 'AI' attached to everything lately. Here's the honest, plain-English version of what an AI agent actually is, how it differs from a chatbot, and what these systems can really do — explained by a company that runs one for real work every day.
The Three Levels
Chatbot, model, agent — they are not the same thing.
Most confusion about AI comes from these three getting lumped together. They form a ladder, and each rung can do strictly more than the one below it.
Chatbot
Follows a script
Matches your words against pre-written rules and replies from a fixed menu of responses. Ask it something off-script and it breaks. The 'press 1 for scheduling' phone tree is the voice version of this.
AI model (LLM)
Understands and generates language
A large language model like the ones behind ChatGPT can genuinely understand a question and compose an original answer. But on its own, it can only talk. It cannot check a calendar, send an email, or book anything.
AI agent
Understands, decides, and acts
An agent is an AI model that has been given tools and a goal. It can decide it needs information, go get it from a real system, act on the result, and keep working across multiple steps until the job is done.
Capabilities
What AI agents can actually do.
Strip away the hype and four capabilities separate agents from everything that came before them:
Take real-world actions
Booking appointments, creating records, sending messages — an agent's output isn't just text, it's completed work in real business systems.
Chain multiple steps together
Verify an address, then check drive times, then find a calendar slot, then book it, then notify the team. Each step feeds the next, without a human stitching them together.
Use live data instead of guessing
Agents look things up at the moment you ask. Ours reads today's actual calendar and today's actual traffic — not a snapshot from whenever it was trained.
Know when to hand off to a human
A well-built agent has explicit limits and escalation rules. Ours pages a human instantly for anything urgent, and hands over the moment you ask.
A Working Example
Ours answers the phone right now.
Everything above is abstract until you watch an agent work. Call (571) 444-6886 and you'll talk to one. In a single conversation, our agent will understand your electrical problem in your own words, verify your address against Google Maps, check drive times between the jobs already on our calendar, book you a slot our crew can genuinely make, create your customer profile in our field service system, text and email our team about the booking, and then send you an email with photo requests tailored to your job.
That is seven distinct actions across four different systems, initiated by nothing more than you describing a flickering light. That chain of understand → decide → act → verify is what the word “agent” actually means.
And if you want proof of what this kind of AI can build, you are looking at it. The same kind of AI wrote most of the code behind this website — the page you are reading included — and drafted much of its content: more than a thousand pages of layouts, structured data, and interlinked guides. Not on its own. Every one of them came out of back-and-forth conversation with our owners, who supplied the direction, the electrical knowledge, the pricing, and the voice, while the AI handled the complex construction.
That is the honest division of labor, and it is the same one you get on the phone: the AI does the heavy coordination, and the humans who know the work stay in charge of it. If it can take our guidance and build all of this, it can hold a conversation with you and figure out your breaker problem.
