What's typical for 2026
A code-compliant 200-amp panel upgrade in Northern Virginia runs $6,000 to $7,500 in 2026. That covers the new panel, the 2020 NEC fireman's disconnect at the meter, whole-home surge protection, new service entrance conductors, a new meter base on most overhead-service homes, the local jurisdiction permit, Dominion Energy coordination, and the final inspection.
400-amp service upgrades — typically needed for larger homes with multiple EV chargers, heat pumps with electric backup, or whole-house standby generators — run $9,500 to $13,500. The cost premium covers the larger panel, heavier feeder conductors, and the coordination with Dominion for the upgraded service drop.
If you got a panel-upgrade quote in the $3,000 to $4,500 range a few years ago, that wasn't wrong at the time. 2026 pricing reflects the NEC 2020 code requirements Fairfax County and surrounding jurisdictions have since adopted — the fireman's disconnect, whole-home surge protection, and updated grounding system standards are no longer optional add-ons.
| Upgrade Scope | Typical Cost | Time to Complete |
|---|---|---|
| 100A → 200A standard | $6,000 – $7,500 | 1 day (4–8 hrs power off) |
| 200A → 400A | $9,500 – $13,500 | 1 day |
| 60A → 200A (full service replacement) | $7,500 – $10,500 | 1–2 days |
| Sub-panel addition (existing 200A panel) | $1,800 – $3,500 | 4–6 hours |
What's included in the price
The 2020 NEC adoption added several requirements that didn't exist when older quotes were issued, and they're now mandatory:
• Outdoor fireman's disconnect at the meter — separate from the main panel inside the house. Required so the fire department can de-energize the home without entering the building.
• Whole-home surge protection (Type 1 or Type 2 SPD) integrated into the new panel. Protects every electronic device in the home from utility-side surges.
• New service entrance conductors (SEC) from the meter to the panel, properly sized for 200A. The old wires retire, not get reused.
• New meter base on most overhead-service installations. The old meter bases typically aren't rated for the integrated fireman's disconnect.
• Permit and inspection through the local jurisdiction (Fairfax County DPWES, Arlington County, City of Alexandria, Loudoun County Building & Development, etc.).
• Dominion Energy coordination for overhead-service homes. We schedule the meter disconnect and reconnect; you don't.
• Updated grounding electrode system to current NEC 250 standards. Most pre-1985 homes have inadequate grounding by today's code.
What drives variance within the range
Three Northern Virginia-specific factors push prices toward the upper or lower end of the typical range:
• Service type: overhead vs. underground. Most older Fairfax, Arlington, Alexandria, and Vienna neighborhoods have overhead service (a drop wire from the pole to your meter). This requires Dominion Energy coordination, which adds 1–2 days to the timeline and ~$500 to the cost. Most Ashburn, Lansdowne, and newer Loudoun construction has underground service that doesn't require Dominion involvement.
• Panel location accessibility. A panel in an unfinished basement is the cheapest to access. A panel in a finished interior space (kitchen, hallway) requires careful wall protection and adds labor. Old Town Alexandria historic-district homes with plaster walls are the most expensive on labor.
• Existing wiring conditions. Aluminum branch wiring (common in 1965–1973 NoVA homes) requires aluminum-rated lugs and proper antioxidant treatment at the new panel connections — adds $250–$500. Federal Pacific (FPE) or Zinsco panels require additional inspection of feeder terminations for damage from years of arcing — usually no extra cost but flagged in the quote.
Permit costs and timing by jurisdiction
Permit fees and timelines vary by jurisdiction in the DMV. All are included in our quoted prices:
• Fairfax County DPWES: $80–$150 permit fee, 3–5 business day issuance. Inspector visits within 1–3 business days of work completion. The most common jurisdiction we work in.
• Arlington County: $60–$130 permit fee, 2–5 business day issuance. Separate authority from Fairfax County. Faster average inspection turnaround.
• City of Alexandria: $90–$160 permit fee, 3–7 business day issuance. Old & Historic District homes may also require Board of Architectural Review (BAR) approval for exterior-visible meter base relocation — adds 4–8 weeks.
• Loudoun County: $75–$140 permit fee, 3–7 business day issuance. Most Ashburn and Brambleton homes have underground service so no Dominion involvement.
• Prince William County: similar fee range and timeline to Loudoun.
• Maryland (Prince George's, Anne Arundel): permits issued through county PIE divisions. Typical 1–2 day longer turnaround than NoVA.
FPE and Zinsco panels: the urgency premium
If your home has a Federal Pacific (FPE) Stab-Lok panel or a Zinsco/Sylvania-Zinsco panel, the panel upgrade is more time-sensitive than a typical capacity upgrade. Both brands have documented failure modes:
• FPE Stab-Lok breakers fail to trip during overloads at rates exceeding 50% in independent testing. The breaker that's supposed to protect a circuit during a fault doesn't trip, current keeps flowing, and wire insulation melts.
• Zinsco breakers fuse to the aluminum bus bar during repeated minor overloads. Once fused, the breaker can never trip again — current keeps flowing past safe limits during the next major overload.
Replacement cost is the same as a standard 200A upgrade ($6,000–$7,500). The urgency factor is the insurance angle: most Northern Virginia homeowner's insurance carriers now treat both panels as policy-renewal-blocking. Many real-estate transactions require replacement before closing.
If you're not sure whether your panel is FPE or Zinsco, the breakers are usually colorful (red, blue, green, yellow) or have "FPE" / "Federal Pacific" / "Stab-Lok" / "Zinsco" / "Sylvania" / "Magnetrip" on the cover or breakers themselves. See our dedicated pages on FPE replacement and Zinsco replacement for the full picture.
What you get from AJ Long Electric
Every panel upgrade we do includes:
• Written quote before the work starts. No mid-job change orders. The number we quote is the number you pay.
• 5-year warranty on installation labor. Manufacturer warranties on the new panel and breakers (Square D, Siemens, or Eaton) pass through to you and typically run 5–10 years.
• Insurance-ready documentation. After the inspection passes, you receive an itemized invoice, the permit close-out, and a letter you can send to your homeowner's insurance carrier confirming the upgrade with a UL-listed modern panel.
• Master-electrician oversight. Every panel upgrade is done by our crew under our master electrician license (Virginia Class A #2701 048844A). We don't subcontract.
• Same-day inspection scheduling. First-visit pass rate is essentially 100% across all NoVA jurisdictions — we know what each county's inspectors look for.

Frequently Asked Questions (5)
Why did panel-upgrade prices go up?
The 2020 National Electrical Code adoption added required components (fireman's disconnect, whole-home surge protection, upgraded grounding) that didn't exist when older quotes were issued. These are no longer optional add-ons and they materially change what a code-compliant install costs.
Can I find a cheaper electrician?
You can find a quote below $6,000 in NoVA, but the math doesn't work if the work is being done to current code. Common ways a low quote happens: skipping the permit, omitting the required surge protection, reusing service entrance conductors that should be replaced, or planning to issue change orders mid-job. Get the line items in writing before agreeing.
Should I get 200A or 400A?
Most NoVA homes are fine with 200A. The exceptions: multi-EV households, homes with heat pumps + electric resistance backup heat, homes with whole-house standby generators, or homes adding a heated pool or large outdoor kitchen. The NEC 220 load calculation we run during the in-home assessment gives you the firm answer.
How long is the power off?
Typically 4–8 hours of a single working day. We schedule the Dominion meter disconnect for late morning so power is restored before evening. If you have medical equipment requiring continuous power, we coordinate around it.
Is the cost different in Loudoun vs. Fairfax?
Marginal — Loudoun and Fairfax permit fees differ by about $50. Most Ashburn homes have underground service which saves on Dominion coordination. Otherwise the work is the same across jurisdictions.
