Capacity addition vs. full upgrade in Ashburn
Ashburn's housing stock is newer than most of NoVA — primary build-out 1990s through mid-2000s. Almost all came with 200-amp service from the original construction. That changes the panel-upgrade conversation:
- Adding a Tesla or ChargePoint? If your panel has spare capacity (NEC calc), no upgrade needed — just a new 40A or 50A circuit. $1,200–$2,800 typical.
- Adding solar with inverter? Sub-panel typically required for the solar disconnect. $1,800–$3,500.
- Finished basement with new circuits? Sub-panel often the cleanest solution. $2,000–$3,500.
- Two-EV household or anticipating multiple EVs? Full 400A service upgrade worth considering. $9,500–$13,500.
- 1980s home with original 150A panel? Standard 200A upgrade. $6,000–$7,500.
Every Ashburn assessment includes an NEC 220 load calculation of your actual usage profile so the recommendation is data-driven, not generic.
Loudoun County permitting
Ashburn is in Loudoun County — separate permitting authority from Fairfax County or Arlington. We pull electrical permits through Loudoun County Building & Development under our master electrician license. Residential electrical permits typically issue in 3–7 business days. The inspection happens after the work; we schedule it and meet the inspector.
Most Ashburn homes have underground service (built 1990s+), so the work happens at your meter base without needing Dominion Energy to disconnect — same-day completion possible. The 1980s sections of Ashburn (eastern Ashburn near Belmont Country Club) sometimes still have overhead service that requires Dominion coordination.
Frequently asked questions
Do newer Ashburn homes need panel upgrades?
Sometimes — Ashburn's mid-1990s through mid-2000s housing (One Loudoun, Brambleton early sections, Ashburn Village) was usually built with 200A service, which IS adequate for normal household use but often insufficient for modern EV-charger + heat-pump + home-office load profiles. The most common Ashburn panel work is capacity additions (sub-panels) rather than full replacements. For 1990s-era homes with original 150A service, full 200A or 400A upgrades are increasingly common as EV adoption grows.
What does a panel upgrade cost in Ashburn?
$6,000 to $7,500 for a standard 200A upgrade — same NoVA-wide pricing. Sub-panel additions (for a finished basement, detached garage, EV charging, or solar inverter integration) run $1,800 to $3,500 depending on run length. Ashburn's larger lots and longer service drops can push pricing toward the upper end of the range.
What about Loudoun County permits?
Ashburn is in Loudoun County (not Fairfax County), so panel upgrades go through Loudoun County Building & Development permitting — a different process from Fairfax County. We're licensed and pull permits in Loudoun routinely. Loudoun's residential electrical permit timeline is typically 3–7 business days, similar to Fairfax.
I'm adding a Tesla. Do I need a panel upgrade?
Depends on your existing service. If you have a 200A panel with at least 30 amps of spare capacity (NEC calculation), we can add a 40A or 50A circuit for the EV charger without upgrading the panel. If you have 150A or your panel is already running close to capacity, we'd recommend upgrading to 200A (sometimes 400A if you anticipate multiple EVs). The in-home assessment includes a load calc that gives you the firm answer.
Do new construction Ashburn homes have Federal Pacific or Zinsco panels?
No — both Federal Pacific Stab-Lok and Zinsco were discontinued before Ashburn's primary build-out (1990s+). However, some 1980s homes in the older parts of Ashburn (eastern Ashburn near Belmont Country Club) do have FPE panels. If you have one, see our FPE replacement page for the brand-specific safety concerns.
Will Dominion Energy need to disconnect?
Most Ashburn homes (built 1990s+) have underground service, so the work happens at your meter base without involving Dominion Energy crews — same-day completion possible. Some 1980s Ashburn homes still have overhead service and require Dominion coordination, which adds 1–2 days to the timeline.

Adding EV charging and not sure if your panel can handle it?
NEC load calc included in every assessment. If your panel has capacity, we just add the EV circuit. If not, we recommend the right level of upgrade with honest pricing.
