Comparing electrician prices across Virginia takes more than comparing one hourly number. A contractor may price a defined project upfront, charge for diagnosis in time increments, or apply a minimum appointment charge. Ask for the complete pricing method before deciding which quote is lower.
What an hourly number leaves out
Two contractors quoting different hourly rates may also have different minimum charges, staffing, equipment, materials, and travel policies. One hour of billed time may not represent the full appointment price. Ask what starts the clock, the minimum charge, how additional time is measured, and what work is included.
We have not verified a current statewide survey of contractor rates. We therefore do not present precise city-by-city averages or percentage premiums as established facts. AJ Long Electric's rates below apply to our own service; another company's terms must be confirmed with that company.
Defined projects versus troubleshooting
An installation with an agreed scope can often be priced before work starts. The quote should identify the device or equipment, cable route, access, permit responsibility, and any finish restoration. An uncertain fault is different: the cause may not be known until testing is performed.

For example, a request to replace a selected light fixture is different from a request to find out why the light flickers. Treating both as the same small job can hide important differences in investigation and scope.
A practical quote-comparison checklist
- Appointment type: is this a free estimate, diagnostic visit, or a visit prepared to perform an agreed type of work?
- Minimum and increments: what is the first charge, and how is additional time billed?
- Materials: what equipment and parts appear in the written scope?
- Permits and coordination: who handles submissions and any required inspection appointments?
- Access and finishes: is opening or restoring a wall included, excluded, or conditional?
- Changes: how are unexpected conditions explained and authorized?
- Warranty: distinguish the contractor's labor warranty from the equipment manufacturer's terms.
Why the property matters more than a regional average
The route to a detached garage, access above a finished ceiling, the condition of existing equipment, and the selected appliance or fixture can change the work considerably. Give each contractor the same description and equipment details so the estimates cover comparable work.
For planned work, gather model numbers, exterior photos, a description of the desired location, and any known access restrictions. Do not remove electrical covers or expose wiring for a quote. For a fault, record when it happens and which parts of the home are affected.
AJ Long Electric's published policy
Project estimates are free, and you approve the project price before work begins. Diagnostics and repairs use our published time-based rates.
AJ Long Electric estimates and service pricing
Estimates are free for every service. Scheduled estimate visits and written project prices are free. Diagnostic and repair work is a separately priced service.
The $99 dispatch fee applies only when we arrive prepared to complete a project, provide the price on site, and you decline the work. It covers travel and preparation. It is waived when you accept the on-site quote and for active members. It is not charged for a scheduled estimate visit.
Diagnostics and repairs cost $195 for the first 30 minutes, then $60 for each additional 15 minutes. Many common issues can be diagnosed and resolved within 30–60 minutes. Timing depends on the issue; more complex problems can take longer.
Our quoted electrical installations include a five-year workmanship warranty from completion. Parts and equipment carry their manufacturer warranties.
