Door-to-door solar sellers
Fairfax County tells residents to ask a door-to-door solar salesperson for their county-issued license before engaging, and never to give a solicitor personal information such as a birthdate or Social Security number. A solicitor's license is separate from a contractor license. A reputable company can show you both.
What permits the county requires
In Fairfax County, a residential solar permit is required for roof-mounted and free-standing residential solar projects, and the related electrical equipment is entered on that same permit. If the job also replaces or upgrades the electrical service, a standalone electrical record is required for that work. Projects inside the towns of Vienna and Clifton also need the town's approval uploaded to the county record.
The county waives its permit fee for solar applications. It conducts combination inspections, with the related inspections for a project scheduled on the same day.
After inspection, the utility has its own step. Dominion Energy Virginia requires the system be certified by a licensed Virginia electrician or approved by the local inspection authority before it grants permission to operate. Other counties and cities in Northern Virginia run their own permit offices, and we confirm the right one from the property address.
