The electrical side
Older Annandale panels and solar
Most Annandale houses went up between 1950 and 1965 on 100A service. Some still have a fuse box, and some have a Federal Pacific or Zinsco breaker panel. Solar does not go on any of those. The array sends power back through a breaker in your panel, and the panel has to be rated for it.
The rule that decides it is the 120 percent rule in the electrical code. Add the main breaker and the solar breaker together, and the total cannot be more than 120 percent of the panel busbar rating when the solar breaker sits at the far end of the bus. A 200A busbar with a 200A main allows a 40A solar breaker, which carries an inverter output of about 32 amps, roughly 7.6 kW at 240 volts. A 100A panel with a 100A main allows 20A, roughly 3.8 kW. That is why the panel, not the roof, often sets the size of an Annandale array.
