How Much Does a Solar Battery Cost in Virginia?

A whole-home battery integrated with solar installs for $6,000–$15,000+ in Northern Virginia, including the transfer equipment and the backed-up-load panel. A portable power station or wall pack with its hookup is $2,500–$6,000.

Answer first

The short answer

A home battery in Northern Virginia runs $6,000–$15,000+ installed for whole-home integration, or $2,500–$6,000 for a portable power station or wall pack with its hookup. A 10 kW array plus a whole-home battery comes to $30,000–$43,500+ as a typical combined example. There is no federal homeowner credit on a battery installed after December 31, 2025.

  • The battery price is itemized next to the array, never folded into the per-watt number.
  • Which circuits you back up moves the price more than anything else.
  • An older or full panel is a separate line on the same proposal.
  • Dominion's Virtual Power Plant pilot can pay enrolled batteries for helping the grid.

What each price covers

Both bands are installed prices from our published price list. The written proposal names the equipment, the circuits, and the transfer method for your house.

Home battery installed prices, Northern Virginia
SetupInstalled priceWhat it runs in an outage
Portable power station or wall pack with hookup$2,500–$6,000A few selected circuits through the hookup
Whole-home battery integration$6,000–$15,000+The circuits on the backed-up-load panel, or more with a larger design
Typical 10 kW array plus whole-home battery$30,000–$43,500+Backed-up circuits, recharged by the array in daylight

Panel upgrades and service work are itemized separately. The combined example adds the published 10 kW array band and the whole-home battery band.

What moves a battery price

Runtime is a design number, not a sales number. It depends on usable capacity, the running load, starting current, weather, solar production, and recharge conditions. The proposal lists the circuits and the assumptions so you can see what changes it.

  • Selected circuits or whole home: central air, electric heat, well pumps, and EV charging need more capacity and output.
  • Panel condition: an older or full panel may need replacement before a battery and a backfed solar breaker fit.
  • Transfer equipment and the backed-up-load panel: the parts that isolate the house from the grid in an outage.
  • Location and runs: garage, basement, or exterior placement, and the distance to the panel.
  • Existing solar: adding a battery to an array you already own is a different design from a new combined system.

Credits and programs for batteries in 2026

Section 25D covered battery storage through 2025, and it ended for home systems installed after December 31, 2025. Rental and business property may qualify under Section 48E, and battery storage is excluded from that credit's 2027 solar cutoff; confirm it with a CPA.

Dominion's Virtual Power Plant pilot is the new program to watch. Dominion says the pilot launches in August 2026, subject to approval, runs through July 1, 2028, and that most customers join free and can earn credits or payments for letting enrolled devices, including home batteries, support the grid during peak demand.

If you already have solar on Dominion's legacy net metering, the timing of a battery matters. Under the tariff Dominion filed on July 30, 2026, a new notification to add capacity, including battery storage, moves a legacy account to NEM 2.0 once those terms take effect for applications approved on and after May 1, 2027.

Why the electrician installing it matters

A battery is electrical work from end to end: the panel, the transfer equipment, the backed-up-load panel, the grounding, and the utility notification. We are licensed electricians since 1996, and the same crew handles the panel, the battery, and the array, so nothing is handed off between companies.

Questions

How much does a solar battery cost in Virginia?
Whole-home battery integration installs for $6,000–$15,000+ in Northern Virginia. A portable power station or wall pack with its hookup is $2,500–$6,000.
How much is solar with a battery?
A typical 10 kW array plus a whole-home battery comes to $30,000–$43,500+. Panel work, when needed, is itemized separately.
Is there a tax credit for home batteries in 2026?
Not for a home you live in. The federal battery credit under Section 25D ended for systems installed after December 31, 2025.
How long will a home battery run?
It depends on usable capacity, the circuits it carries, starting loads, weather, and recharge from the array. The proposal shows the circuits and the assumptions.
Can I add a battery to solar I already have?
Yes. The design starts with your existing inverter, the panel, and the circuits you want backed up. On Dominion's legacy net metering, time the utility notification with the May 1, 2027 NEM 2.0 date in mind.
