AJ Long Electric was founded in 1996 by John Long after 15 years as a union electrician, and it is still family-owned and family-run. The company holds Virginia Class B contractor license 2705031092. Its solar installations are done by an in-house crew, with no commissioned sales team and no subcontracted electrical work.

Three generations in the trade
The trade came first. Tom Long spent his career with IBEW Local 26, working his way up from apprentice, and helped his son John into the union, where John spent 15 years building his own experience.
In 1996 John started his own business, for more control over the balance between earning a living and being there for his family. The family name became the company name. John holds the company's master electrician credential and still sets its standard: quality work, charged honestly, with the kind of service you would give your own family.
John taught the trade to his son Matt starting around age 13. After college and a career in operations and business development in California, Matt came home and now runs the company with John as General Manager.
Why an electrical contractor builds solar
The difficult parts of a solar job are electrical: the panel connection, the heavy-up, the grounding, and the utility interconnection. Those are the jobs an electrical contractor already does every week, and on many solar projects they are handed to a subcontractor the homeowner never meets.
So we built a solar operation the other way around. The design starts at the panel and the service, the crew is ours, and the licensed contractor on the permit is the one that answers the phone afterward.
A master electrician is on site for every solar project.
How we work

- Experience is the standard. We strive for electricians with over 25 years of experience, and newer electricians run only the work they have mastered, learning under our veterans.
- People you are comfortable having in your home. Character counts as much as skill.
- Word of mouth keeps prices fair. A small advertising budget and low overhead are what let us publish our prices.
